According to the European Parliament the EU should regulate the activities of sport agents. Thus, the MEPs have recently adopted a resolution calling for the creation of a European licensing system for sports agents. Unsurprisingly, the European Commission could not agree more. According to Euractiv, Androulla Vassiliou said that "the EU can play a coordinating role and help to ensure a harmonised approach to the issue of agents (…)" In fact, the European Commission is already planning to use Article 83 as a legal basis whereby it can harmonise criminal law. The Commission will soon adopt a Communication on EU sports policy which will also cover this issue.

As Emma McClarkin MEP, said, according to Euractiv, "any legislation that comes forward to regulate this sector must be from the national sporting bodies or authorities such as FIFA or UEFA. It is not the EU's place to be regulating the sporting world".
