The Express reports: “MPs are to hold a historic vote next week on whether to organise a national referendum on UK membership of the European Union, it was announced last night.” It noted “As a vote in favour would heap pressure on David Cameron to agree to a binding poll, Tory chiefs were yesterday plotting to impose a three-line whip on the party’s MPs to vote down the proposal.”

Bill Cash was quoted as saying , “I am delighted this motion has been accepted by the Backbench Business Committee.

The paper pointed out “Westminster sources last night suggested all party chiefs, not just the Tories, would impose three-line whips to oppose the referendum call.” It was noted that Bill Cash “urged his colleagues to revolt against the whip,” in fact, he said “I think many of them will. The Conservative Party previously promised a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty, and now they are saying voters are not fit to decide.”
