The European Parliament “elected” today (17 January) a new president – Martin Schulz, German Socialist MEP. He received 387 votes out of 670 cast, and had, therefore, an absolute majority. However, such outcome just reflects a behind closed doors deal made in 2009 between the European Parliament two biggest political groups, the EPP and the Socialist groups. They agreed, in advance, to share the presidency over the Parliament's 2009-14 term. Hence, Jerzy Buzek MEP of the EPP held the presidency for the first half of the term, and now Martin Schulz leads the European Parliament until July 2014. This couldn't have been more undemocratic.
