EurActiv reports that according to a new reserch by the Pew Environment Group "EU subsidies have been fuelling the overcapacity of Europe's fishing fleets."

The Pew Environment Group launched a new website database, fishsubsidy.org., aim to show "how and where EU fishing subsidies have been spent."

According to this database between 1994 and 2006 there were 97, 260 payments of EU subsidies to ports and fishing vessels which amount 8.5 billions euros. Moreover, it reveals that Spain got "48% of all EU fisheries subsidies went to Spain alone, (…) the bulk of which (46% of the total) was used to build new vessels."
